Eva Chima

Woodbridge, ON

Eva Chima is an undergraduate student in the Bachelor of Health Sciences at McMaster University. From volunteering at a local farmers' market to hosting weekly STEM themed workshops for young students, Eva has been able to get a glimpse at some of the many challenges and barriers that people face within their environments. She is particularly passionate about working directly with community members to provide equitable services to all. Eva is committed to using her creativity, imagination, and humanitarianism to lead people toward a world that values the beauty that lies within diversity, healthy communities, and following our dreams while prioritizing equity and reconciliation. Food has always been at the centre of her health and culture – and she feels extremely passionate about fighting food insecurity in her community. In a society so abundant in produce and natural resources, Eva is committed to making sure they get shared equitably and sustainably.

Tote-Tally Cozy Paint Night & Study Snack Pack Initiatives

The project consisted of two activities: The Study Snack Packs Initiative & The Tote-Tally Cozy Paint Night. 1. Study Snack Packs: The Study Snack Packs is a yearly initiative run by the McMaster Student Union Food Collective Centre (FCC). It offers a variety of nourishing snacks to power them through exam season. 2. The Tote-Tally Cozy Paint Night: The Tote-Tally Cozy Paint Night is a brand-new initiative that fosters a social atmosphere where people can connect, raise awareness of food insecurity and share resources of the Food Collective Centre at McMaster university.

About this Project

Communities Served

My project will involve and/or impact the following communities:

  • At risk youth & children
  • Multi-barrier populations
  • Senior citizens
  • Refugees & newcomers

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

When it comes to community impact projects, the UN has created 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These are the Sustainable Development Goals associated with my project.

  • SDG 2: Zero hunger
  • SDG 10: Reduced inequalities

How the project works

☆ The Tote-Tally Cozy Paint Night: Guests have the chance to 1) engage in sustainability within the food sector by reducing the amount of plastic bags used to grocery shop 2) connect with other members of the McMaster community through art 3) learn about supports and resources surrounding food insecurity found on campus. ☆ Study Snack Pack: Students have the chance to sign up online to receive a study snack pack during exam season.

Project Impact

The first event, the Tote-Tally Cozy Paint Night, was a great achievement, with an attendance of over 50 participants. The second event, Study Snack Packs, happened during the university's exam season. The event was also a great success. We distributed over 100 Study Snack Packs to students at McMaster University. Following the two projects, the Food Collective Centre saw an increase in social media engagement as well an increase of 30% of visitors at our on-campus Food Bank.

Project Mission

This project is designed to facilitate and improve the visibility of the Food Collective Centre's services to students facing food insecurity. Working towards reducing food inequity and insecurity within the McMaster and Hamilton communities, this project creates and offers sustainable and equitable tools and resources to meet that goal.
